Spawned in Hollywood Florida, I began electrocuting myself with electronics kits and blowing things up with chemistry sets almost immediately.
Dropped out of high school at 16 to join a rock-n-roll band. Toured the southeast US over the next 4 years and recorded records while also working my way up from dishwasher to manager at a local restaurant. I still write and record music.
Managed and opened restaurants over the next 10 years in cities ranging from South Florida, New York, and Boston on the east coast to San Francisco on the west.
Ran the Big Sur and Boston marathons while raising money for charity. The weather for the Boston marathon was so bad that year--30mph wind, sleet, rain, temperature in the 20s--that they almost cancelled the race. Thousands of runners--13% of the total--decided not to show up, but there was no way I was quitting after all those hours of training in the ice and snow!
Decided to go back to school an follow my childhood passion for science. Put in 4 years at City College San Francisco while also working full time. Was fortunate to transfer into UC Berkeley on scholarship as a junior, where I got a bachelor's degree in physics.
Got accepted to MIT's Technology & Policy and Materials Science & Engineering master of science programs. Sold everything I owned and rode my motorcycle from San Francisco to Boston to get there. My graduate research enabled me to work with global leaders in the telecom industry to characterize the costs & benefits of next-gen gigabit fiber-to-the-home networks.
Went on to complete a PhD in Engineering Systems at MIT. During my graduate work, I got to work closely with executives at large firms from multiple industries, including Intel (next-gen semiconductor manufacturing), British Telecom (fiber-to-the-home optical networks), and General Motors (second generation Chevy Volt battery manufacturing), helping them think about and model their technology roadmaps.
Lucky enough to be a live-in mentor, life coach, conflict resolver and program manager to brilliant MIT undergrads as a Graduate Resident Tutor in D-entry of MacGregor House.
After my PhD graduation, biked across the US with my PhD advisor and friend. Covered 3000+ miles, 100+ miles most days across the desert with average temperatures over 100 degrees!
Founded or Co-founded 3 companies, wearing every hat there is, from Head of Product to UX designer to sales. While still at MIT I founded Mobile Genius, a boot-strapped mobile development company. Over the next 2 years I built the business to $150k/yr in revenue before shutting down in 2013. At the most recent startup I co-founded, Fuelist (as seen in Techcrunch!), I managed our 10-person design and remote dev teams spread across the world. We stretched the initial $500k investment out over 2 years, using it to fund a 10 person team, building and shipping web and mobile apps. Ultimately, we reached >5,000 unique web sign ups and >1,000 iOS mobile app downloads.
